Effects of the Smoke-Free Apartment Project in Seoul

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine effects of the smoke-free apartment project in Seoul, and provide useful information for establishing policy and further studies. The participants were residents of 4 apartments, which were chosen the smoke-free apartment at different areas of metropolitan Seoul, and residents who lived at 3 apartments, which were not the smoke-free apartment, as a control group. Researchers developed a questionnaire to measure the experience of environmental tobacco smoke and seeing others¡¯ cigarette smoking or evidence of smoking at public places in the apartment. A factor analysis indicated that this questionnaire has 3 factors such as opinion on environmental tobacco smoke and smoking ban, the experience of having harmful effects of secondhand smoke or seeing smoking at public places in the apartment, and the experience of secondhand smoke in daily life.
Results revealed that residents of the smoke-free apartment were becoming less experienced secondhand smoke in daily life after implement of the smoke-free apartment. And, after implement of the smoke-free apartment, residents showed more positive attitude toward smoking ban in public places, and more negative attitude toward effect of the smoke-free apartment on preventing youth smoking. After implement of the smoke-free apartment, residents realized that harmful effects of secondhand smoke in apartment were reduced, and they were less experienced smoke in public places of apartment such as stairway, passageway, elevator, playground, open space, and benches. Therefore, they were becoming less seeing cigarette butts at public places in the apartment and unpleasant feeling caused by others¡¯ cigarette smoke was reduced after implement of the smoke-free apartment. These results suggest that the smoke-free apartment project significantly reduced harmful effects of environmental tobacco smoke in Seoul.
